An electret microphone is a type of electrostatic capacitor based microphone which eliminates the need for a polarizing power supply by using a permanently charged material.

This is a microphone that suitable for most applications including for use with a computer. This is the best and interesting circuit for the beginner. The distance between the plates is directly proportional to sound present in the environment. A very basic circuit to get started with microphone is shown below.

The diaphragm is made of thin teflon material and is also termed as electret and hence the name electret mic. An electret is a stable dielectric material with a permanently embedded static electric dipole moment which due to the high resistance and chemical stability of the material will not decay for hundreds of years. This electret has a fixed charge c and is embedded between the two electrodes. The type of electret microphone we will use is a 2 2kω electret microphone that requires only 2 2v of power.

Please note that the capacitor component shown in the electret capsule schematic above is represented by the pick up plate the electret material which together create a capacitor.
